4. Surah An-Nisa (The Women)
سُورَةُ النساءReciter: Sheikh Mishary Rashid Alafasy • Guided by Ustadha Maryam Al-Dimashqiyyah
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
يَٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO
ٱلنَّاسُl-nāsumankind
ٱتَّقُوا۟ittaqūFear
رَبَّكُمُrabbakumuyour Lord
ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One Who
خَلَقَكُمkhalaqakumcreated you
مِّنminfrom
نَّفْسٍnafsina soul
وَٰحِدَةٍwāḥidatinsingle
وَخَلَقَwakhalaqaand created
مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom it
زَوْجَهَاzawjahāits mate
وَبَثَّwabathaand dispersed
مِنْهُمَاmin'humāfrom both of them
رِجَالًاrijālanmen
كَثِيرًاkathīranmany
وَنِسَآءًwanisāanand women
وَٱتَّقُوا۟wattaqūAnd fear
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One
تَسَآءَلُونَtasāalūnayou ask one another
بِهِۦbihiby Him
وَٱلْأَرْحَامَwal-arḥāmaand the wombs
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
كَانَkānais ever
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumover you
رَقِيبًاraqībanan Observer
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
وَءَاتُوا۟waātūAnd give
ٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰٓl-yatāmāthe orphans
أَمْوَٰلَهُمْamwālahumtheir wealth
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تَتَبَدَّلُوا۟tatabaddalūexchange
ٱلْخَبِيثَl-khabīthathe bad
بِٱلطَّيِّبِbil-ṭayyibifor the good
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تَأْكُلُوٓا۟takulūconsume
أَمْوَٰلَهُمْamwālahumtheir wealth
إِلَىٰٓilāinto
أَمْوَٰلِكُمْamwālikumyour wealth
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, it
كَانَkānais
حُوبًاḥūbana sin
كَبِيرًاkabīrangreat
And give to the orphans their properties and do not substitute the defective [of your own] for the good [of theirs]. And do not consume their properties into your own. Indeed, that is ever a great sin.
يَسْتَفْتُونَكَyastaftūnakaThey ask you for a legal ruling
قُلِquliSay
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
يُفْتِيكُمْyuf'tīkumgives you a ruling
فِىfīconcerning
ٱلْكَلَٰلَةِl-kalālatithe one without ascendants or descendants
إِنِiniIf
ٱمْرُؤٌا۟im'ru-ona man
هَلَكَhalakadies
لَيْسَlaysanot
لَهُۥlahufor him
وَلَدٌwaladuna child
وَلَهُۥٓwalahuand for him
أُخْتٌukh'tun(is) a sister
فَلَهَاfalahāthen for her
نِصْفُniṣ'fu(is) half
مَاmā(of) what
تَرَكَtarakahe left
وَهُوَwahuwaand he
يَرِثُهَآyarithuhāinherits from her
إِنinif
لَّمْlamnot
يَكُنyakunis
لَّهَاlahāfor her
وَلَدٌwaladuna child
فَإِنfa-inBut if
كَانَتَاkānatāthere are
ٱثْنَتَيْنِith'nataynitwo (sisters)
فَلَهُمَاfalahumāthen for them
ٱلثُّلُثَانِl-thuluthāni(are) two-thirds
مِمَّاmimmāof what
تَرَكَtarakahe left
وَإِنwa-inAnd if
كَانُوٓا۟kānūthere are
إِخْوَةًikh'watanbrothers and sisters
رِّجَالًاrijālanmen
وَنِسَآءًwanisāanand women
فَلِلذَّكَرِfalildhakarithen for the male
مِثْلُmith'lu(is) the like
حَظِّḥaẓẓi(of the) share
ٱلْأُنثَيَيْنِl-unthayayni(of) the two females
يُبَيِّنُyubayyinuMakes clear
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
لَكُمْlakumto you
أَنanlest
تَضِلُّوا۟taḍillūyou go astray
وَٱللَّهُwallahuAnd Allah
بِكُلِّbikulliof every
شَىْءٍshayinthing
عَلِيمٌۢʿalīmun(is) All-Knowing
They request from you a [legal] ruling. Say, 'Allah gives you a ruling concerning one having neither descendants nor ascendants [as heirs].' If a man dies, leaving no child but [only] a sister, she will have half of what he left. And he inherits from her if she [dies and] has no child. But if there are two [sisters], they will have two-thirds of what he left. If there are both brothers and sisters, the male will have the share of two females. Allah makes clear to you [His law], lest you go astray. And Allah is Knowing of all things.
